Ingredients
Rawa - 1 cup
onion - 1 medium sized, chopped
peas -2 tbsp
green chillies- 2-3 ,cut into bits
ginger - 1 small piece , fine chopped ( or 1/4 tsp ginger paste)
oil - 2-3 tbsp
salt to taste- about 1/2 tsp
boiling water - 2- 2 1/2 cups
For the tadka
mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
jeera - 1/2 tsp
chana dal - 1/2 tsp
Method
1. Dry roast the rawa in a pan for 4-5 minutes.REmove from the fire & keep aside.
2. Heat the oil in a kadhai, add the mustard seeds , let it splutter & then add the jeera & chana dal.
3. After a minute, add the chopped onions, green chillies & ginger & fry for a few minutes until the onions start turning golden at the edges.
4. Now the peas & sprinkle some water & cook for a few minutes ( about 5-6 minutes) until the peas are nearly done.
5. Add the water & allow to come to a boil. Lower the flame, add the roasted rawa with the salt into the boiling water & stir quickly , so that no lumps are formed.
6. Cover & cook for 5-6 minutes until the water is completely used up & the uppama is at the right consistency. The rawa should be cooked by then. Stir well.
7. Add the curry leaves & chopped coriander & top with a few drops of ghee.
8. Serve hot.
P.S - There are many variations one can do .
1. After frying the onions ( step 3 ), you could add a chopped tomato & cook for a few minutes before proceeding to the next step. The tomato gives the uppama a nice tangy twist.
2. You could add diced carrots & potatoes along with the peas & proceed in the same manner.
This gives a more hearty dish with vegetables & all that.
3. If you do not have any vegetables on hand, you can omit even the peas. Just usee the onion & rawa.
Tastes great anyways !!!
