Onion Chutney



This chutney is a must have in the family with dosa, pesaratt dosa, idlis etc. Nice & chatpata.
Do try it out.

Ingredients

onion - 3 medium sized, roughly chopped
grated coconut - 2 tbsp ( optional)
dry red chillies - 3
urad dal ( broken & without skin ) - 2 tsp
mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
oil - 4 tsp
hing/ asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
tamarind - a very small piece
or
tamarind paste - 1/4 tsp
salt to taste

Method

1. Heat 2 tsp of oil in a kadhai & fry the onions for a few minutes, till it starts getting transparent. Keep aside.
2. In another kadhai , heat the remaining oil, add the mustard & let them crackle. Then add the urad dal, red chillies, & hing & fry until the dal becomes slightly reddish. Remove from fire.
3. In the mixer first grind the fried red chillies until they are more or less powdered. Then add the urad dal& hing mixture,& grind for a another minute or two, until the dal is roughly powdered . Now add the tamarind bit & grind for another minute.
4. Then add the onions & coconut & the salt & just give a quick turn in the mixer. The onion mixture should not be ground to a smooth paste....it should be roughly ground.
5. Put the chutney into a serving bowl & serve with idly, dosa or pesaratt dosa.
